Only Mr Darcy: A Pride & Prejudice Variation by Julie Cooper ★★★★☆

Image
Elizabeth Bennet's rather terrifying grandmother was dying.  She was said to be gifted with second sight and Elizabeth wanted to ask for a prediction on the name of her future husband. So twelve year old Lizzie drags her older sister Jane to the lady's bedside. Knowing that name, colours her relationships with the men she meets in Society, as she grows to womanhood. When a new tenant arrives at Netherfield Park, excitement rises. Could this be the long awaited future husband? Unfortunately, Mr Bingley has the right name, but is only interested in Jane. His friend, Fitzwilliam Darcy views Jane as an appropriate wife for himself and seeks to woo her.  Darcy and Lizzie agree to help each other to reach their goals, but an attraction between them causes them confusion and vexation.  The novelty of Darcy pursuing Jane, and Elizabeth thinking she wants Charles is well handled, with a pleasing denouement. Abandoned at the Altar by Julie Cooper ★★★★☆

Image
Fitzwilliam Darcy, a rich, handsome member of the Ton, visits his friend Charles Bingley in the country.  Darcy is rapidly infatuated with Elizabeth Bennet, but knows that she is far below him in rank and unsuitable to be mistress of his vast estate. After an initial poor opinion, Elizabeth finds herself falling in love with him. She tries to guard her heart but is overjoyed when Fitzwilliam proposes (having become thoroughly carried away!) The wedding is quickly planned and a special license acquired.  A family crisis pulls Darcy away and he sends messages to delay the wedding and reassure Elizabeth of his love. Unfortunately, his trusted messenger has a black heart. No messages are delivered and the whole of Meryton watches as Elizabeth waits at the church in vain. Julie Cooper weaves the tale with familiar characters, but they often take on very different attitudes to those we are accustomed. Dialogue from Pride and prejudice appears from unexpected mouths. I have seen this...

The Bachelor Mr Darcy by Julie Cooper ★★★★★

Image
After the death of Mr Bennet, Elizabeth finds herself cast out of Longbourn by Mr Collins and Mrs Bennet. Fortunately, her sister Jane goes with her and they settle with their Aunt and Uncle Gardner in Cheapside. Elizabeth is desperate to be independent and not burden the Gardners. Teaching doesn't work out but another option presents itself.  Elizabeth finds herself writing a Society gossip column called Mr Pennywither's Reports. In the persona of an aging valet, she combines gossipy stories with wit, humour and a gentleness not found in more vituperative publications. Fitzwilliam Darcy is an honourable young man, burdened with inheriting the vast Pemberley estate in his early twenties. He is responsible for his much younger sister, Georgiana.  He also must shelter his Cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam, who has been brought low by the physical and mental impacts of battle. Decent, hardworking and appearing rather dull. It is a shock to suddenly find himself the focus of the London g...

Unfortunately, Jane overhears and decides to flee, so that Charles would not be stuck with her.  Elizabeth Bennet is furious with Darcy and let’s him know it, in no uncertain terms!  Elizabeth’s dramatic exit goes awry, leading to a stumble and the appearance of compromise.  Cue the arrival of Mr Bennet, Sir William Lucas and others. All in their cups and not willing to listen to reason. Darcy is happy to do the honourable thing and marry Elizabeth. However, Mr Bennet decides that Darcy is a rake. As Elizabeth and Darcy come to love each other, they are torn apart by Mr Bennet’s determined efforts to send Elizabeth where she will not be found. This book is a brilliant ...

Elizabeth Bennet and her sister Jane, swore to marry only for the deepest love. Always her father’s favourite, she felt secure in his love and respect.  Many happy hours were spent together in his book room, reading, debating and sharing the quiet peace. On the day of the Netherfield ball, Mr Bennet summons her. One brief conversation destroys all of her plans for the future, her faith in her father and her equanimity. He has arranged a marriage for her, to Mr Goulding, a man older than her father, a man she thinks of as an uncle. Goulding needs an heir, after the recent death of his son and Bennet owes him a debt. Unfortunately, Elizabeth is to pay that debt. The only concession is a small delay to allow Elizabeth to come to terms with the match. A Stronger Impulse by Julie Cooper ★★★★★

Image
Fitzwilliam Darcy loves Elizabeth Bennet but his appalling proposal leads to rejection and heartbreak. He travels to join his young sister Georgiana in Ramsgate, but on arrival the sight of her in the arms of rake and scoundrel, George Wickham causes him to have an apoplexy.  The resulting damage and loss of coherent speech leave him vulnerable and the vultures are circling.  Unfortunately, the vultures in this case are his own extended family, who want control of the Darcy fortune. Elizabeth Bennet has always been the least favourite daughter at Longbourn. Mrs Bennet favours the daughters who are most like her. Mr Bennet behaves as though Elizabeth is invisible.  When Elizabeth refuses to secure Longbourn for her family by marrying her odious cousin, Mr Collins, she is exiled.  Sent to an unknown family member and thence into a life in service.  She manages to postpone that future by travelling to Ramsgate with an acquaintance from Meryton.  In Ramsgate sh...

A Yuletide Dream: Variations on a Jane Austen Christmas by Julie Cooper ★★★★☆

Image
Fitzwilliam Darcy’s head has been turned by a beautiful, intelligent, vivacious gentlewoman. However, Elizabeth Bennet is of a lower social status and has an embarrassing family. She has connexions to trade and worst of all her obsequious cousin William Collins, is parson to Darcy’s aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Darcy flees her company before he allows his passion to overcome his sense of duty to his family and status. He also persuades his friend Bingley to join him, to save him from a marriage of unequal affections to Jane Bennet. Just before Christmas, Lady Catherine dies suddenly, leaving Darcy to oversee her estate, Rosings. He ponders whether he ought to marry his unappealing cousin Anne, to protect her and Rosings for the family. In a combination of a Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life, Darcy is visited in his dreams by the ghost of Lady Catherine (dragging, not chains but a Rosings fireplace) continuing her lifetime harangue that he should marry Anne. Then his mother’s...

Nameless by Julie Cooper ★★★★★

A tale of secrets, lies, debauchery, scandal, gossip and maybe even murder. After losing her home and loved ones twice in seven years, Elizabeth Bennet has found work as a companion to the disagreeable, Dowager Countess of Matlock. So much has been lost and changed, she barely remembers the events that followed “Netherfield Park being let at last” in 1811. Fitzwilliam Darcy is a faint memory. A family member visiting the countess, turns out to be Mr Darcy. Still wealthy, handsome and recently widowed, Mr Darcy shocks Elizabeth with a proposal. Experience has taught her not to squander opportunities, so she accepts. Although Darcy is grim and solemn at first, Elizabeth is delighted to enjoy a passionate and idyllic wedding tour, as they slowly wend their way to Pemberley. At Pemberley, his first wife’s presence is everywhere, as is her vicious mother, Mrs de Bourgh. And so progresses a tale of secrets, lies, debauchery, scandal, gossip and maybe even murder. This is an excellent homage ...

Seek Me: Georgiana's Story: A Sequel to Tempt Me by Julie Cooper ★★★★★

Image
Delightful This novella provides a glimpse into the future, 200+ years after the end of Tempt Me. So lovely to see Elizabeth and Darcy again, together with the many descendents of their friends and family. The focus is on their daughter Georgiana and her seemingly hopeless quest for true love. I really enjoyed this, especially after just finishing Tempt Me on Audible. Do read it! Amazon review   Goodreads review
