A Delicate Rose: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Jan Ashton and Justine Rivard ★★★★☆

Image
While Elizabeth and Darcy are still secluded at Darcy House after their wedding, an unwelcome visitor forces their way in.  Lady Catherine de Bourgh has already expressed her disapproval of her nephew's marriage.  Darcy is irate when she demands that Elizabeth accept her tutelage in achieving acceptance in Society.  He is utterly horrified when Elizabeth accepts, as a way to heal the breach in Darcy's family.  However, with the assistance of other members of the family, Elizabeth manages to establish a rapport with the irascible dowager.  For Lady Catherine, the arrival of an old family friend sparks memories of an unrequited love, but is there hope for more in the Autumn of their lives?  Really surprising but delightful denouement. A Hopeless Business: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Jan Ashton ★★★★★

Elizabeth Bennet has already refused an offer marriage from her father's cousin, William Collins. Unfortunately, he is persistent. He follows her on her daily walk to make yet another attempt.  Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy appears and makes every effort to stop Mr Collins. Sadly, a falling tree branch and a rainstorm causes all three of them to take shelter in the Bennet boathouse. Fortunately any accusations of impropriety are dismissed, Mr Collins finally gets the message and Elizabeth gets to know that Darcy is a good man. A young relative of Mr Hurst arrives at Netherfield and becomes attached to Elizabeth. Mr Nugent is immature, sport obsessed and tedious.  When Elizabeth declines his offer of marriage, Mr Bennet declares that she will have to accept the next proposal, no matter who makes it. With six months left until she gains her majority, Mr Bennet has that power. How will Elizabeth steer clear of unwanted suitors and will she ever find a man willing to share both love and re...

A More Agreeable Man by Jan Ashton ★★★★☆

Image
Jane Bennet goes on holiday to Ramsgate. There she befriends Georgiana Darcy and meets George Wickham. In an uncharacteristically impetuous turn of events, she returns to Longbourn in love and betrothed! Wickham charms most of the family then departs for London to take care of “business”. Georgiana was in turns delighted with her new friend, then bereft when Jane no longer had time for her, due to Wickham’s intense courtship. Fitzwilliam Darcy is angry at this treatment of his sister, but never expects to meet this inconstant friend. Thus, when he joins his friend Bingley at Netherfield Park, he is surprised and somewhat resentful on meeting Jane. On their part, the Bennet family are worried about the appearance of Darcy, due to Wickham’s tall tales of his wickedness. Elizabeth Bennet is determined to find out the true character of Jane’s betrothed and Fitzwilliam Darcy might just have the answers. An interesting variation, well worth a read! A Famous Good Marrying Scheme: A Humorous Friends to Lovers Variation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice by Jan Ashton. ★★★★☆

Fitzwilliam Darcy loves Elizabeth Bennet and Charles Bingley loves Jane Bennet. The men have returned to Hertfordshire, to woo the sisters. Unfortunately, on a windy autumn day, an accident happens with profound consequences. The Bennet sisters are crossing a small bridge, when an altercation with a fox, causes Jane and Kitty to fall off. Elizabeth saves Kitty, but Jane goes into the river, hitting her head. Charles would have been delighted to come to her rescue, if only he had not been distracted by his hat. Instead, Darcy leaps in to save Jane. When Jane develops a sort of amnesia, she latches onto the fact that Darcy rescued her. Thus, in her mind he must be her true love. She doesn’t even remember Charles or her feelings for him. What follows is funny, with some slight angst. Elizabeth works with Darcy, to support Jane in her confusion, whilst trying to shield Bingley from the truth, lest he abandon Jane again. Add in Mrs Bennet’s matchmaking machinations to really stir the pot! G...

When he hears that she is shortly to receive a proposal, he decides action must be taken. A fabulous house party at the Matlock estate is arranged. In the Spirit Intended: Variations on a Jane Austen Christmas by Jan Ashton ★★★★★

Image
When they last met at Jane and Bingley’s wedding, misapprehension of each other’s feelings kept Elizabeth and Darcy distant. In the intervening year he has travelled in Greece, hoping distance and distraction might mend his heart. Elizabeth has lived with the Bingleys and rejected yet another proposal, all the while missing Darcy and regretting the loss of his regard. When Darcy returns from Greece, heavy snow stops him travelling to Derbyshire for Christmas. Bingley prevails upon him to join the Bingley Christmas celebrations. The knowledge that Elizabeth will be present, both disturbs and attracts Darcy. The resulting story is a delightful reacquaintance of Darcy and Elizabeth at Christmas. There is yearning and hope, with a tiny touch of angst. Wonderful! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. All views expressed are my own.
