Something Wickham This Way Comes by Michelle Ray ★★★★☆

Image
When the Militia come to Meryton, the populace are excited. None more so than the Bennet sisters. The addition of Mr Wickham (soon to be Lieutenant) is even better. Wickham's charm and charisma draws in all of Meryton and much of Hertfordshire. In fact, I felt as though I was reading a Pride and prejudice variation / Magic crossover. Elizabeth Bennet is completely in his thrall. When her Aunt Gardner warns caution, she is unimpressed.  When her new friend Fitzwilliam Darcy informs her of a vast array of red flags about Wickham, it seems to speed her to folly. So when Wickham proposes, Elizabeth is swept up in the moment and agrees. Then, suddenly Wickham backs off. When he visits a week later, he shows his true self. The betrayal is truly shocking. Somehow, Elizabeth needs to find her way out of ruin. Maybe a friend can help? Enjoyable novella. I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. By duty bound by Michelle Ray ★★★★☆

Fitzwilliam Darcy and Richard Fitzwilliam are cousins and both are second sons.  When they visit Meryton, they are taken with the Bennet sisters.  Darcy decides to throw family expectation to the winds! Just as he is about to propose to Elizabeth Bennet, they are interrupted by news that Darcy is now the heir.  The weight of duty falls upon him and he walks away.  Elizabeth makes a life for herself in London but finds all suitors fall short of Darcy.  Even when he delivers the famous put down, at the Meryton assembly. Over the next few years, their paths occasionally cross. Will they ever find their way together? An interesting variation, with a struggling, occasionally exasperating Darcy and an incredibly long-suffering Elizabeth. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. An Inducement into Matrimony by Susan Adriani, Mary Smythe, Paige Badgett, Jan Ashton, Gailie Ruth Caress, Amy D’Orazio, Nan Harrison, Michelle Ray & Kay Bea ★★★★★

AN INDUCEMENT INTO MATRIMONY is an anthology of short stories which are variations of Pride & Prejudice, written by some of today’s best JAFF authors. Sixteen Days At Pemberley by Susan Adriani In which Lydia does not go to Brighton. The Gardiners and Elizabeth stay at Pemberley, allowing Darcy to show how much he has improved himself and how much he adores his dearest, loveliest Elizabeth. The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Smythe In which Fitzwilliam Darcy has a headache with an odd side effect. He awakens with the ability to hear everyone’s thoughts. This ‘blessing’ leads him to learn that despite her flirting and sycophancy, Miss Bingley thinks him dull and stupid. Whilst Miss Elizabeth’s thought’s show that she has not been flirting with him as he believed, but in fact dislikes him. Can his power help him to change her mind? The Heart’s Consent by Paige Badgett In which Elizabeth Bennet meets a frosty reception at Darcy House. Lydia Bennet’s elopement, put an end to Eli...

There You Were by Michelle Ray ★★★★☆

“I was not looking for love, but there you were.”   This variation gives an interesting perspective.  Elizabeth Bennet and her only sister, Jane grow up at Longbourn with only a neglectful father, having been abandoned by their mother. The scandal of this abandonment leaves the family on the very margins of society, despite being born gentry. Neglected Lizzy, given little education and no social polish, makes an impetuous decision, resulting in forced marriage to James Fitzwilliam, younger son of the Earl of Broxbourne. The family despise Lizzy and do the barest minimum to assist the pair. James has a commission as Lieutenant Colonel, which yields a small income. He is given access to a small plot of land to build a house on. Fortunately, his cousin Darcy builds a small house for them. With little income and no staff, Lizzy lives the hard life of a soldier's wife. (This is what would have been Lydia's lot in life, in Pride & Prejudice). As the years go by and t...
