None So Accomplished as Mary: A Sweet Extras Novelette by Leenie Brown. ★★★★☆

Image
This pride and prejudice variation is a novella which would serve as a second epilogue to How to Marry an Accomplished Lady but is enjoyable as a stand alone short story. Colonel Fitzwilliam and Mary Bennet became friends in Hertfordshire, whilst helping Darcy and Elizabeth deflect the machinations of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Now in London for the Season, could that friendship become something more? A diverting vignette, perfect for an afternoon of coffee, cake and a comfortable sofa! Fitzwilliam Darcy is infatuated with Elizabeth Bennet, but knows that his family expect him to marry with an eye to status and wealth. Elizabeth has neither. Elizabeth initially disliked Darcy, following an overheard insult. An intervention from Darcy's friend Bingley, ensures the couple realise that they are meant to be together. All appears settled between them until Darcy's aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh arrives declaring an impediment. And for once, she is armed with more than just bluster! This short and sweet novella focuses on the stay of Jane and Elizabeth Bennet at Netherfield Park. Charles Bingley is in love with Jane. Fitzwilliam Darcy is infatuated with Elizabeth, but trying very hard not to be.  Charles sees that Elizabeth is the ideal partner for Darcy, if only he could let go of the “Darcy Pride”. When Darcy gives a less than pleasing opinion of Jane, as a match, Charles and Hurst take steps to convince Darcy of the worth of both ladies. A pleasing novella with an agreeable resolution. Her Father's Choice: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by Leenie Brown. ★★★★☆

While we are familiar with matchmaking Mamas, it pays to watch out for the rarer, sneakier, devoted Father. Mr Bennet realises that Fitzwilliam Darcy is the perfect match for his witty, intelligent, stubborn daughter Elizabeth. Unfortunately, Darcy made a very poor, first impression and Elizabeth firmly believes that he is a dreadful man. The Netherfield Ball provides the opportunity for a compromise, when both Elizabeth and Darcy seek solitude to read in the library. Despite their innocent activities, discovery by Elizabeth’s gossiping Aunt Phillips seals their fate. Darcy is actually quite pleased, as he is in love with Elizabeth. He is mortified to discover that Elizabeth is devastated at the thought. So Darcy will have to work hard to win Elizabeth’s heart.  And what will the couple do when they realise Mr Bennet’s culpability? A short and sweet read. His Father's Last Gift: A Darcy and Elizabeth Variation by Leenie Brown. ★★★☆☆

This Pride and Prejudice variation begins when Jane Bennet becomes unwell on a visit to Netherfield Park.  Her sister Elizabeth, is called to nurse her back to health.  The residents of Netherfield have varying responses to this. Mr Bingley is delighted as he adores Jane.   Mr Darcy is secretly happy, as he is falling in love with Elizabeth.  Bingley’s sisters are horrified as they think Jane is not rich or connected enough for their brother.  They hate Elizabeth as they view her as competition, for the wealthy Darcy. In the original story, Jane is in love with Bingley but too shy to let him know. She also believes his sister’s are good friends, not the duplicitous harpies, they are. Elizabeth hates Darcy, having overhead an unkind remark when they met. This story sidesteps the misunderstandings. So Jane has a confident, tough side and calls the harpies on their lies, in public, then let’s Bingley know she loves him. Elizabeth and Darcy talk to each other and ra...

Mr Enfield, long time resident of Netherfield Park, took a grandfatherly interest in the vivacious second daughter of his neighbours, the Bennet family. Elizabeth Bennet loved to walk through the countryside and admired a particular area of Mr Enfield’s garden. He invited her to enjoy it whenever she pleased and renamed it ‘Elizabeth’s garden’. When he died, she was stunned and delighted to learn that he had left the garden to her. But gifts can come with strings! Fitzwilliam Darcy was fond of his uncles' cousin, Mr Enfield. He would visit whenever he traveled along the road to London, which passed Hertfordshire. When the gentleman left Netherfield to him in his will he was pleased but planned to sell, feeling he had sufficient property to manage. His friend Bingley wants to buy an estate after a time leasing to learn estate management. What could be better than for Bingley to buy Netherfield? Except Darcy discovers that the estate must be complete before it can be sold and part of...
