Mr. Darcy and the Island: a Pride and Prejudice variation by Valerie Lennox ★★★☆☆

Image
Silly, flirty, fifteen year old Lydia Bennet is invited to Brighton, a whole town full of soldiers. What could go wrong? Elizabeth Bennet begs her father to cancel the trip. Instead, he finds it amusing to send her along to supervise Lydia. Handsome, charming Lieutenant George Wickham, a former favourite of Elizabeth is also in Brighton. However, Elizabeth has finally understood that he is a duplicitous rake. When she lets him know she is wise to him, he retaliates by targeting Lydia for seduction and ruin. One day she looses track of Lydia. Thinking that she sees Lydia in a crowd boarding a ferry, she is alarmed to see Wickham is also there. She jumps on board but finds no Lydia. Then she walks into Fitzwilliam Darcy. Darcy and Elizabeth have a tempestuous past. He loves her and proposed to her. Unfortunately, Elizabeth detested him and refused, quite vociferously. Darcy wrote a letter to Elizabeth defending his character and clearing up misinformation provided by Wickham. As a result...

Mr. Darcy and the Governess: a Pride and Prejudice variation by Valerie Lennox ★★★☆☆

Image
Georgiana Darcy only just escaped ruin and injury following the actions of her governess Miss Younge and the perfidious George Wickham, ex-family friend. Her brother Fitzwilliam Darcy came to her rescue but during the encounter, he killed Wickham. Both Georgiana and Fitzwilliam are forever changed by the events. Following a collapse of her family’s finances, Elizabeth Bennet takes a job as governess to Georgiana Darcy. However, Pemberley is imposing and grim, Georgiana is troubled, and Fitzwilliam Darcy is secretive and brooding. Can Elizabeth break through their reserve? I have to say that I am not sure about this one. Darcy’s behaviour is massively out of character. Georgiana swings from childlike and coquettish. It is an interesting look at post-traumatic stress disorder and the effects of abuse and grooming. However, it is not a comfortable read. Mr. Darcy and Mrs. Fitzwilliam: a Pride and Prejudice variation by Valerie Lennox ★★★★☆

Image
The morning after the dreadful Hunsford proposal, Darcy seeks out Elizabeth, with a letter defending himself and explaining the truth about George Wickham. As he approaches, Elizabeth meets Colonel Fitzwilliam, on his way home from a very successful night gambling. So successful, that he has won an estate and funds to support a family. He proposes on the spot and is accepted. Darcy retreats unseen. So begins a twenty-year marriage, to a man who becomes steadily less amiable, the more he drinks. He has fits of jealousy, convinced Elizabeth and Darcy care for each other. Although he was an excellent soldier, he is a poor estate manager. So, Elizabeth must raise her children, run her household and take over running the estate. When Fitzwilliam dies, Darcy and Elizabeth are drawn together, but Elizabeth is determined never to marry again, unwilling to lose her independence. What will the outcome be? I really enjoyed this. It shows the gritty reality of life and marriage. It was good to s...

Mr. Darcy the Rake: a Pride and Prejudice variation by Valerie Lennox ★★★★☆

Image
Fitz Darcy is a rake, but he has standards! Widows and married women fine, but he doesn’t ruin the innocent. Initially, Darcy appears quite threatening but Elizabeth Bennet challenges him. She leads him to consider how women feel about his behaviour and their lack of choices in life. Darcy starts to change from wicked, to incorrigible, to thoughtful and loving. I liked his character arc and his vulnerability. Elizabeth seems resigned to spinsterhood, which at first she feels distressing. Later, she finds that it gives her license to be adventurous and experiment with passion. If she will not marry, why does it matter if she is virtuous? I rather enjoyed this, although George Wickham with morals, is rather tedious and Georgiana needs to grow up! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Entrancing Mr. Darcy by Valerie Lennox ★★★☆☆

Image
Oddly unsatisfying On the night that the Netherfield party first attend the Meryton assembly, Miss Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy are unimpressed with each other. Darcy seeks some quiet from the noise and crowd of the assembly. Elizabeth seeks some cool air and a chat with her friend Charlotte. When Charlotte is delayed joining her outside, Elizabeth looks for her. A light seen through an open door, leads Elizabeth to search a storage room and the cold causes her to shut the door. Unfortunately, Charlotte is not in the storage room; Mr Darcy is! Efforts to escape fail and while moving around Elizabeth catches her dress on a nail, ripping it substantially. This of course is the point that the internal door is opened and all of Meryton society, see Elizabeth, her torn dress and Mr Darcy. For the sake of her family’s good name, Elizabeth agrees to marry Mr. Darcy. Given the circumstances, they have decided to live apart, and Mr. Darcy has prepared will a small estate call...

Finding Mr. Darcy by Valerie Lennox ★★★★☆

Image
Delightful What if Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth met when they were young? What if Mr. Darcy had an ambitious, cunning uncle? Years ago, Mr. William Oliver was a different man. He was raised to inherit Pemberley, as Fitzwilliam Darcy.  The summer of his thirteenth year, he spent his time sneaking off to play games with a girl named Elizabeth, who was visiting her aunt and uncle in Lambton, just miles from his home. But all that changed one tragic day when the boy’s father fell to his death, directly after they’d had a terrible quarrel. His uncle, Simon Darcy, ushered him off, telling him that everyone would believe the boy had killed his own father, and that he must run away and never come back. And so, for ten years, Mr. Oliver has lived another life with another name, as a foundling in London, dependent on the employment of his friend, Charles Bingley. He accepts an invitation to the country with the Bingleys and accompanies them to a public ball. Then he sets eyes on Elizabeth, all ...
