Whispers at Pemberley: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Novella by E. G. Hades ★★★★★

Elizabeth Bennet vociferously rejected the proposal of the proud and haughty Fitzwilliam Darcy. In Jane Austen's masterpiece, Darcy offers a letter explaining himself and warning Elizabeth of the danger of a scoundrel.

This gothic-tinged novella explores a future without that warning.

After her family is ruined, Elizabeth Bennet must make her own way in the world. The life of a governess is respectable but lonely. Not part of the family but not part of the staff.

After six years as a governess, she is approached with a job offer. An anonymous client in a mystery location seems dubious. However, the salary is extremely good and so she feels compelled to accept.

Elizabeth finds herself at a huge manor in Derbyshire. Delightful accommodation and food are offset by the mysterious employer and the odd atmosphere in the house.

She meets her charges, six year old twins, Emma and Edward. They are delightful and engaging. Edward reminds Elizabeth of herself as a child, forever chafing at the need to be indoors.

When she finally meets her secretive employer, she is shocked to find a careworn Fitzwilliam Darcy. He is however, a doting guardian to the twins, happy to play and crawl on the floor with them.

Past resentments and Elizabeth's reduced status make for a difficult relationship but gradually they develop mutual respect and perhaps something more.

Elizabeth grows to adore the twins and feel at home at Pemberley.

Hidden scandal and the threat of blackmail blight their peace.

When the twins are physically threatened by their reprobate father, Elizabeth doesn't hesitate to put herself between them and danger.

In the aftermath, a new understanding is achieved.

E.G. Hades has wonderful way with words and I heartily recommend this book.
