Irresistibly Alone by Julie Cooper. ★★★★★★★★★★

Image
Elizabeth Bennet and her sister Jane, swore to marry only for the deepest love. Always her father’s favourite, she felt secure in his love and respect.  Many happy hours were spent together in his book room, reading, debating and sharing the quiet peace. On the day of the Netherfield ball, Mr Bennet summons her. One brief conversation destroys all of her plans for the future, her faith in her father and her equanimity. He has arranged a marriage for her, to Mr Goulding, a man older than her father, a man she thinks of as an uncle. Goulding needs an heir, after the recent death of his son and Bennet owes him a debt. Unfortunately, Elizabeth is to pay that debt. The only concession is a small delay to allow Elizabeth to come to terms with the match. Elizabeth is grief stricken at her loss of choice, of hope, of all she had planned. Although forced to attend the ball, Elizabeth rapidly seeks sanctuary in the dark, frosty garden. When Fitzwilliam Darcy entered Hertfordshire Society...

A Favorable Impression by Amanda Kai. ★★★☆☆

A Pride and prejudice variation which starts from a meeting at Pemberley.  Elizabeth and Jane Bennet, on holiday with their Uncle and Aunt Gardiner. While touring Pemberley, a chance meeting with the owner, Mr Darcy leads to an invitation to stay for a house party. Jane is reunited with Mr Bingley, their amiable neighbour from Hertfordshire.  While Elizabeth makes a favourable impression on Mr Darcy.  Darcy follows Elizabeth to Hertfordshire, his heart very soon engaged.  Unfortunately, meeting the Bennet family is less than pleasant for the fastidious Darcy. Darcy struggles between his feelings for Elizabeth and his revulsion for her family’s behaviour. Sadly, Darcy gives Elizabeth the classic “Hunsford” proposal. Elizabeth is humiliated and feels she must refuse, despite being in love with the man, she thought she knew. Time passes and Elizabeth finds herself in London for the Season. (Mrs Bennet finally persuaded her husband to agree to a Season for all her girls)...

Mr. Darcy's Garden of Delight by Maria Dashwood. ★★★★☆

Image
As one would expect of a novella, there is not time for deep character development.  This Darcy is much less the proud, stiff “Hunsford” Mr Darcy, more the playful, pleasing “Pemberley” Darcy. The man Elizabeth Bennet encounters in the gardens of Rosings, is engaging and willing to share recollections that show his vulnerability.  All rather unsettling for Elizabeth, who still views him with disapprobation, following his insult to her at the Meryton assembly. Playing the outdoor equivalent of a parlour game, they search through the gardens for various blossoms. Elation at finding the winning bloom, rapidly evolves into a passionate embrace and several searing kisses. Alas, they are seen by Mr Collins, who can’t resist shouting compromise, to most of Lady Catherine’s staff and guests. To save their reputations, Darcy declares their betrothal and Elizabeth must concur. A rapid wedding is arranged. Passion continues, but will love prove elusive? An enjoyable read, with enga...

River of Dreams by J Dawn King ★★★★★

Fitzwilliam Darcy's father was a cold and distant man who instilled in his son a sense of duty and responsibility.  Darcy was raised to believe that he must always put the needs of his family and his estate first. This burden has weighed heavily on Darcy throughout his life, and it has made him aloof and guarded. Unfortunately, only three members of his family were loving and supportive.   Georgiana, his little sister loves him but is cowed by her haughty father.   Richard Fitzwilliam, his cousin is as close as a brother but duty to the Crown calls him away.   Lady Anne Darcy was a sweet and loving mother who drowned in a freak accident. Her death left Darcy with a long lasting fear of water. When Darcy visits Hertfordshire, he meets Elizabeth Bennet and insults her! Fortunately, Darcy apologies and Elizabeth accepts. Elizabeth is burdened by revelations of just how poor a father, Mr Bennet is and what it might cost the whole family.   During...

Locked in Love and Mary's to Blame by Bella Breen ★★★☆☆

Image
Mary Bennet is jealous of the attention that Mr Collins is paying her sister Elizabeth.  At the Netherfield ball, her solution is to lock Elizabeth out of the way in a dark room.  Unfortunately, that room was not empty. Fitzwilliam Darcy just wanted some peace and quiet.  Elizabeth and Darcy try to escape the room by the window, but their progress is observed resulting in a compromise. A forced marriage scenario for Elizabeth and Darcy is a common trope in Jane Austen variations. Often these result in angst ridden efforts to find some way of making a life with a stranger. Bella Breen paints an appealing picture of Elizabeth and Darcy finding affection for each other. However, we are told that this happens, rather than being shown by action and dialogue. Unfounded by Jessie Lewis ★★★★★

Image
As Elizabeth Bennet tours Pemberley, she feels anxious about running into the owner, Mr. Darcy. Having rejected his proposal of marriage, she assumes he must loathe her. However, when they do cross paths, she is pleasantly surprised to find that he harbours no ill feelings towards her. Unfortunately, Elizabeth is unaware that her reunion with the master of Pemberley is regarded with suspicion by one very significant member of the household. To this person, very few are good enough for Darcy and Elizabeth is dismissed as a fortune hunter to be repelled. Darcy is astonished to discover Miss Bennet’s presence in his home, and even more surprised to learn that her opinion of him has significantly improved.  He begins to contemplate resuming his efforts to win her affection, but unforeseen obstacles emerge that could jeopardize their chances of happiness. Pemberley is under threat. What starts as a small crack, grows bigger, eventually threatening an entire wing. This also serves as a m...

Pride, Prejudice and Wicked Pleasure by Em Brown. ★★★☆☆

Image
Elizabeth Bennet has a sensual awakening after reading Fanny Hill. When she travels to Hunsford to visit her newly married friend, a minor accident throws her into the path of Mrs Abby Trenwith. Abby is an independent and liberal thinking widow, with a secret passion for the sensual arts. She offers to provide a trustworthy, male instructor to give lessons in pleasure and pain. During the lessons, both are masked and disguised, to maintain their anonymity. A good thing too, as Elizabeth would be angry and distressed if she knew who he was! Erotic bits were well done. Fitted in well with the Hunsford narrative. However, way too much of the original story, almost word for word from Austen. I found myself skipping text to find any changes from the original. I love JAFF but this wasn’t a variation or retelling, just Pride and prejudice with some fairly vanilla BDSM. Not sure if I would recommend this to JAFF fans, but fans of erotica may enjoy it. Emma’s Dragon: London and Pemberley by M. Verant ★★★★★

Image
Emma’s Dragon is the second book in M.Verant’s award-winning Jane Austen Fantasy series. It is a sequel to Miss Bennet’s Dragon. At the end of the first book, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy marry and bind with the formidable dragon, Yuánchi, thus thwarting Napoleon’s plans for England. In Emma’s Dragon, we are introduced to Emma Woodhouse, a woman burdened by many secrets. Her own father’s indiscretions, the machinations of her brother in law to steal her inheritance and most of all, her mental afflictions. Her gift should be the ability to heal, but without being bound to a dragon, she lacks sufficient power. Instead her “gift” curses her with, what we would know as obsessive compulsive disorder. Emma meets the Darcys and discovers that she should have been the one to bind with Yuánchi, the deadly dragon coveted by both Emperor Napoleon and England’s Secretary of War. The story unfolds in London, with dark forces kidnapping wyves and dosing them with Night Crawler venom. Thos...

Dangerous When Wet: A Pride & Prejudice VariationDangerous When Wet: A Pride & Prejudice Variation by Jennifer Joy. ★★★★★

Netherfield Park is let at last and the new tenant Charles Bingley, faces unseasonably hot weather for October. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam join the party, after riding from London in the stultifying heat. Having spotted a very tempting stream as they rode across Netherfield’s land, they suggest a swim. On arrival they hear voices and investigate. All five Bennet daughters are swimming, as Mr Bennet sits in the shade. Elizabeth executes a daring, acrobatic swing into the river. Darcy is initially startled, as he thinks she is drowning, then captivated by the sight of Elizabeth in a wet dress. The heatwave lasts about ten days, with more swimming and interaction with the Bennets. Darcy ends up losing his heart to Elizabeth. The book ends at the Meryton assembly, where Darcy and Elizabeth dance and someone gets a wet and muddy comeuppance. This book is wonderful! No angst, very little Darcy pride and Elizabeth at her teasing best. As a bonus we have Jemima, a duck of great ...

Of War and Love by Joe Quackenboss. ★★☆☆☆

Alexander Washburn, youngest son of the Duke of Richmond, had to make his own way in the world. His career in the army saw him rise to the rank of major, but his horrific experiences fighting Napoleon, weigh on his mind and soul. Due to untimely deaths in his family, Alex finds himself recalled from Spain to take up the duties as Duke. It is essential that he find a wife to secure an heir. Unfortunately, this means joining the marriage mart of Society, while struggling with a reticent temperament and what we would call PTSD. An interesting premise for a story. I’m a huge fan of JAFF, so the label of Pride and prejudice variation guaranteed my interest. However, what we get is Pride and prejudice, almost word for word, with all the characters renamed (some very oddly). All is told from Alex’s (Darcy) perspective, which shows his fascination with the ‘Lizzy’ character, as purely self-serving. He has no insight into who she is and what she feels. I know Fitzwilliam Darcy was the same, but...

Enduring Connexions: A Pride and Prejudice Variation by J Marie Croft ★★★★☆

Image
At three and twenty, Fitzwilliam Darcy fell in love with Miss Amesbury. Unfortunately, she betrayed him with his enemy, George Wickham. He vows to protect his heart from any unworthy woman. He collects advice, from those he trusts, on which qualities will make the perfect Mrs Darcy. Unsurprisingly, such a woman is hard to find. Four years later, he meets Elizabeth Bennet. She is beautiful, intelligent, witty and completely unsuitable to be Mrs Darcy. However, the heart wants, what the heart wants. Darcy courts Elizabeth but their budding romance is threatened when Darcy’s lost inamorata, reappears with a scandalous connection to the Bennet family. This is an interesting variation. A different cast of characters at Netherfield Park, allows events to play out differently. Darcy and Elizabeth meet again at a wedding in Derbyshire. The absence of the usual obstructive characters makes a pleasing change. Happy to recommend! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntari...

Mr Darcy and the Suffragette by Maggie Mooha ★★★★☆

Image
This Pride and Prejudice variation sets the story in 1911. This allows us to see just how much has changed in one hundred years. The high prestige department store, Selfridge’s in London, is the thread that brings our characters together. Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley is still a great landowner, but the world is so changed, that maintaining the house is a financial struggle. Elizabeth and Jane Bennet strike out for independence, becoming window dressers in the high prestige Selfridge’s in London.  Elizabeth is inspired to join the Suffragette movement, in their fight for women’s right to vote. But the more involved she becomes, the greater the risk of arrest and police brutality. Bingley is wealthy and affable, Caroline is a snob. Wickham is a waiter by day and lothario by night. Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship follows the classic combination of pride, prejudice and misunderstanding. This is a good variation combining romance with some exciting, dramatic and occasionally angs...

Dragons of Pemberley by Maria Grace ★★★★☆

Image
Set in a Regency England with a large population of dragons. This is book ten of Maria Grace’s Jane Austen’s Dragons series. If you choose to read the entire series, the order should be; book four, A Proper Introduction to Dragons, then books one, two, three, five, six, seven, eight and nine. Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy are senior officers of the Blue Order. Sir Fitzwilliam Darcy, knight of the Pendragon Order, has sworn to “protect and serve the interests of the Blue Order and dragonkind”. Elizabeth is the Dragon Sage, respected by dragons and keepers for her skills and insight into dragon health, culture and psychology. In this book the Darcys and their entourage, gratefully return home to Pemberley after the traumatic events of book eight. Unfortunately, there is a great deal amiss in Derbyshire. A black-market trade in dragon body parts, has lead to poachers preying on dragons. Sir Richard Fitzwilliam has been tasked to investigate and chooses an unlikely ally...

The Warmth of her affection by Elsie Fulbrook ★★★★☆

Image
This Pride and Prejudice variation takes place in Meryton about three years later than the original. All five Bennet daughters remain unwed, with the beautiful Jane, almost on the shelf at five and twenty. Understandably, Mrs Bennet is desperate to marry them off. Eligible men are rare in Meryton, so the arrival of any newcomers is a cause for excitement. When Purvis Lodge is let by Mrs Wilson, a very young widow and her twin sons, lack of eligible new men doesn’t stop the town gossips from having a field day! Mrs Wilson keeps to herself, but when Elizabeth Bennet meets one of the twins on a country stroll, a friendship develops. Jane Bennet and Charlotte Lucas also visit. Some time later a Mr Bingley and Mr Darcy arrive to take up residence at Netherfield Park. They are welcomed into local society as only rich, unmarried men can be. At the Meryton assembly, Jane and Mr Bingley are attracted to each other. Mr Darcy is keen to talk to both Elizabeth and Jane about the neighbours. Th...

Untouched by Rachel Rowan. ★★★★★

Image
In Rachel Rowan’s Entitled Love novellas, elements of regency romance such as elegant homes and clever conversation between beautiful, aristocratic people, are interwoven into modern, spicy romantic comedies. In book 3, Untouched, we meet the beautiful and intelligent, Sophia Clements. However, she is socially awkward (possibly neurodiverse) has no friends and has never had a boyfriend. She masks this by being distant and glacial. When a colleague from America, asks to meet up, she has hopes of romance.  A sarcastic comment from the Honourable Jay Orton, inspires Sophia to seek lessons in how to have a boyfriend. Rather shockingly, she approaches Jay. He is a rather jaded, dissolute playboy who needs a large amount of money, quickly. So when Sophia offers £45,000 for lessons on holding hands, kissing, and all the way up to full intercourse, he rapidly agrees! With a start like that, this story could have been grim. Instead, the book is delightful.  Jay is kind and rapidly beco...

His Father's Last Gift: A Darcy and Elizabeth Variation by Leenie Brown. ★★★☆☆

Image
This Pride and Prejudice variation begins when Jane Bennet becomes unwell on a visit to Netherfield Park.  Her sister Elizabeth, is called to nurse her back to health.  The residents of Netherfield have varying responses to this. Mr Bingley is delighted as he adores Jane.   Mr Darcy is secretly happy, as he is falling in love with Elizabeth.  Bingley’s sisters are horrified as they think Jane is not rich or connected enough for their brother.  They hate Elizabeth as they view her as competition, for the wealthy Darcy. In the original story, Jane is in love with Bingley but too shy to let him know. She also believes his sister’s are good friends, not the duplicitous harpies, they are. Elizabeth hates Darcy, having overhead an unkind remark when they met. This story sidesteps the misunderstandings. So Jane has a confident, tough side and calls the harpies on their lies, in public, then let’s Bingley know she loves him. Elizabeth and Darcy talk to each other and ra...

Mr. Darcy's Valentine by Heather Moll ★★★★★

Image
In this Pride and Prejudice variation, all the action takes place in London. When Mr Bingley arrived in Hertfordshire, he quickly became enamoured of local beauty, Jane Bennet. His attentions gave rise to widespread expectations of an imminent betrothal. Jane is equally in love with Mr Bingley. However, Jane is shy and reticent. She has learnt from bitter experience, that she must hide her feelings from her marriage-obsessed, matchmaking Mama. Unfortunately, outside influences, such as his friend Mr Darcy, persuade Bingley that they can see no evidence that Jane loves him. He goes back to London and does not return. Jane faces the scorn of the neighbourhood and the endless lamentations of her mother. Elizabeth Bennet dislikes Mr Darcy and suspects his influence over Bingley. Elizabeth’s animus towards Darcy has been stoked by the lies of the charming, handsome, deceitful Lieutenant George Wickham, Darcy’s enemy. What she does not know is that Darcy is falling in love wi...

From Another Perspective by MJ Stratton. ★★★★☆

Image
This book follows the events of the much-loved Jane Austen classic, Pride and Prejudice.  The story is told from the points of view of various observers. Each of the seventeen chapters offers a unique perspective, from acquaintances like Mrs. Long and Lady Lucas, to family members such as Mr. Philips, Anne de Bourgh, and Mary Bennet, as well as an array of domestic staff including housekeepers, maids, and even Mr. Darcy’s valet. This fresh approach to the classic story is a delight to read. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Amazon review Goodreads review

Not In Want of a Wife by Amanda Kai. ★★★★☆

Image
Fitzwilliam Darcy is beyond tired of being hunted for his fortune. Elizabeth Bennet wants to marry only for love, while her mother is determined that she shall make a match for security. When Elizabeth and Darcy meet, trying to blend into the background, at the Meryton assembly, they hatch the perfect scheme. Pretend to be courting each other, meaning they will be left alone, then simply end the courtship when Darcy leaves Hertfordshire. Will their strategy work or will there be unintended consequences? I enjoyed this romp, but one has to ignore some hefty breaches of Regency propriety. Elizabeth writing to Darcy, meeting him alone and traveling in his carriage unchaperoned, and broken engagements, with little consequence for both parties. If you are happy to ignore the above, the developing friendship between Darcy and Elizabeth is lovely. I received a free copy of this book via StoryOrigin and am voluntarily leaving a review. The Truth About Family by Lucy Marin. ★★★★★

Image
Elizabeth Bennet was sent to stay with the Dowager Countess Romesley at the age of five. It was meant to be for a few months, until her mother delivered the heir to Longbourn. Mrs Bennet was often spiteful to Elizabeth and her pregnancy made her even worse. However, the invitation to return never came and her family never visited. Elizabeth came to know the Countess’s family; the Fitzwilliams, Darcys and de Bourghs. Most of the Darcys and the Fitzwilliams were friendly, while some were kind but rather distant. Unfortunately, Lady Catherine de Bourgh viewed Elizabeth as inferior and an interloper. Her sister, Lady Anne Darcy agreed. Both were unwelcoming and unpleasant. Mr Hugh Darcy was very kind and his son Fitzwilliam was a close friend of Elizabeth’s. As she grew older, she fell in love with Fitzwilliam Darcy but knew nothing could come of it. He was destined for a brilliant, high society match. On one visit to Pemberley, Elizabeth is cast out by Lady Anne Darcy and sent to Lady Cat...

Handsome Men are Habit Forming by Linda Gonschior. ★★★★☆

This variation takes place in Meryton. Darcy joins Bingley at Netherfield, bringing along his sister Georgiana. She was recently rescued from doing something staggeringly stupid. Alas, like so many teenagers, she seems determined not to learn from it. So Darcy has to supervise a petulant and somewhat manipulative girl, while becoming entranced by Elizabeth Bennet. Add in clandestine meetings, difficult relatives, a surprising Caroline Bingley and further teenage folly! Poor Darcy is in dire need of friendship and perhaps, love? Quite pleasing. An Excellent Walker by Lyndsay Constable. ★★★★★

Image
Whilst walking on the Rosings estate, Elizabeth Bennet literally runs into Fitzwilliam Darcy (a man she views as haughty and arrogant). She reluctantly accepts his offer to escort her back to the Hunsford Parsonage. Their journey is interrupted by a shocking threat from the skies. Suddenly propriety and misunderstandings are irrelevant. Survival becomes their only priority. First, they must deal with a violent enemy, then Elizabeth must use her knowledge of healing to keep Darcy alive. The couple also wrestle with the consequences of spending two nights together in the woods. The story ranges from gripping suspense, angst, sorrow and of course, a happy ever after! This is really good. I enjoy ODC in peril, especially from Napoleon. Lyndsay Constable is fast becoming a favourite author. Darcy and the Spring Surprise: Regency Pride and Prejudice Variation by Andrea Duke. ★★★★☆

Image
Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy have been married for six months and are very happy. Elizabeth is still finding her place as Mistress of Pemberley. The balance between doing too much or too little seems a very narrow path. Her first project, to establish education for the village girls, meets an obstruction in the form of the misogynistic rector. Elizabeth channels her inner “Lady Catherine de Bourgh “ to good effect! A rather vexing day draws to a delightfully naughty ending, when Darcy reveals the surprise he has built for Elizabeth and she reveals a much anticipated blessing. This is sensual but not overly graphic. A charming short story. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Amazon review   Goodreads review

AN INDUCEMENT INTO MATRIMONY is an anthology of short stories which are variations of Pride & Prejudice, written by some of today’s best JAFF authors. Sixteen Days At Pemberley by Susan Adriani In which Lydia does not go to Brighton. The Gardiners and Elizabeth stay at Pemberley, allowing Darcy to show how much he has improved himself and how much he adores his dearest, loveliest Elizabeth. The Pleasure of Understanding Her by Mary Smythe In which Fitzwilliam Darcy has a headache with an odd side effect. He awakens with the ability to hear everyone’s thoughts. This ‘blessing’ leads him to learn that despite her flirting and sycophancy, Miss Bingley thinks him dull and stupid. Whilst Miss Elizabeth’s thought’s show that she has not been flirting with him as he believed, but in fact dislikes him. Can his power help him to change her mind? Marrying Mr. Darcy: A "Pride & Prejudice" Variation by Abbey North. ★★☆☆☆

Image
The basis of the story has merit. Elizabeth and Darcy being brought back together, through the love between his son and her daughter. Unfortunately, as a novella, there is insufficient time to allow slow character development.  As such we have Darcy kissing Elizabeth, on her own doorstep within minutes of meeting her again after 18 years! Whilst the denouement is pleasing, the story feels ‘choppy’ and rushed. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Amazon review   Goodreads review

During their stay at Netherfield Park, Jane and Elizabeth Bennet take a turn about the gardens. Jane goes for help, while Elizabeth rushes to assist Mr Darcy. His head injury removes his inhibitions, resulting in a declaration of love, a proposal and a passionate kiss. He then passes out. Elizabeth wants to hush this up, as she doesn’t want to be forced to marry a man she dislikes. A Man of Good Fortune: A Sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice by Ali Scott. ★★★★★

Image
When Fitzwilliam Darcy suffers a life-altering riding accident, he awakens with no memory of the previous six years. His cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam is a familiar face but Darcy does not know Elizabeth, the woman he is told is his wife. This is Darcy at his irascible best (worst?). He has several injuries, leading to considerable pain. In addition to amnesia, he really struggles to read or write. Darcy is understandably paranoid, being so vulnerable to Elizabeth, particularly when she and Colonel Fitzwilliam are meeting privately but not sharing the reason with Darcy. Elizabeth is loving and endlessly patient with Darcy. He becomes enthralled with Elizabeth and gradually falls in love with her (again!) Darcy’s recovery takes place against the backdrop of an ongoing mystery. What is Elizabeth hiding, who is involved and what does his mother’s sapphire brooch have to do with it? This book is wonderful. Steadfast devotion, angst and mystery. I couldn’t put it down. I received a free copy ...
